Planned our trip six months prior, picking out sites that were "by the sea."
The first leg was Plymouth area, and we were planning to start at Brixton. We had re-checked the sites two weeks before we left. Whether we thought "Brixham" (I don't think so)! or what, I can't remember, but whilst checking out this site, I said to Lyn; "Why did we pick this site? It's not near the sea, it's in the middle of nowhere, and there is nothing at all nearby! There were no entertainments or bar, well nothing really. Note to self; Should have researched this properly!!
We drove in, didn't like it (seemed very residential), phoned twice to book in (nobody there). Got no answer, left a message
and then rung the Fort at Freathy (where we'd stayed before), booked that and swung the rig around and got the hell out of there!
We were given a pitch on the phone, No. 24 on the moat, and half an hour later were negotiating the tiny coast road that swings along the Freathy cliffs with it's stunning views out to sea and over Rame Head in the glorious sunshine!
One of our first towing trips was to the Fort, and disappointing it was, back in 2019. We were virtually on our own on the higher level. We were greeted on arrival with the sad site of the collapsed roof of the swimming pool, the toilets were not good, as was the management of the waste, the facilities and the general state of repair.
Thankfully, all this has changed, there are new and very proactive owners who have tidied and rebuilt the site, the indoor swimming pool, although not open yet now has a roof and I would imagine is beautifully repaired now,
and in use. The reception girls are great, happy, and very helpful.
They have put in a new hard and proper road to get you into position. The only negative I would say is that the ground is so stony on those pitches, it is very difficult to hammer your pegs in to erect your awnings, walls, tents, etc. ..And rubbish internet!!
But many positives; Bar and restaurant area is great, with a decent menu and a great list of beers and wines. They have created an outdoor "sun bar", in an elevated position near the bar, and, whilst we were there (on the jubilee week) the guys had erected a brand new outdoor decking area adjacent to the bar.
This area of Cornwall we love, we have been several times, and nobody knows about it. It is easy to get to (3 hours from Wantage), unspoilt, next to Plymouth and close to Looe, and is perched with amazing views over the sea. The beaches are long and sandy with massive rock and sand pools and are absolutely stunning.
BUT...
This year we struggled getting up wirh the dogs (and Lyn's knee). Most paths down are long and steep and we ended up picking both dogs up what with Joes back leg problem and Molly's age.
With this in mind and it grieves me to say so, Freathy was our very favourite destination in Cornwall, and it is still absolutely beautiful, however now it's not going to be our No.1. When it's scorching in Cornwall the last thing we need is the hassle of climbing back miles carrying all our beach stuff and both dogs. Will still go back!
