The reason that we chose this site was because of the location, and the sea view. Down in the far South of Cornwall, on the Lizard peninsular, and, although we do know Cornwall quite well, this area was completely unknown to us.
We had brilliant directions down to the site, actually taking the country road down through Redruth, and a delightful drive it was too, over the downs. As the country lanes narrowed, we were glad of the directions, which took us straight to Chy Carne without any mishaps.
This is a proper 'camping' site, with a tidy static area on the top level and the sprawling campsite sweeping down towards the sea.
We arrived on the Friday of the Jubilee weekend, so it was bustlingly busy when we arrived on Friday afternoon. We had a big, fully serviced pitch on a great, sheltered, corner plot which we had to nestle in amongst the caravans and tents already on site.
Set up with the awning and the blow-up wall for the dogs, bought logs from the shop for the allowed fire pit (Yes)!! and cracked open a San Miguel and a Pinot to join the party.
There was a lively bar with music and a pool table (in a centralised Marquee), club shop, then, open at the weekends, a lovely take-away Pizza and Ice-cream parlour, of which we happily partook on our first evening.
It has to be said that, on that afternoon of our arrival, our walk down the road to visit Kennack Sands was a bit traumatic, this is a very busy road in peak times, and even as a pedestrian, yet again, in the heat and with two dogs, we were having to give way to cars and jump up onto the roadside banks was very difficult and irritating, going down and coming back up.
But there is a pub on the way down, a cafe/bar on the beach, and the beach was busy and no dogs between 10AM-6PM.
After our Beer Pizza, Ice-cream and fire-pit evening and because of our health, dog fitness and legs, the next morning we drove down to the beach early before anyone else was about.
Oh my God! How stunningly beautiful! Walking in the sea in the warm Cornish sun on this gorgeous beach was one of or holiday highlights. Sand, rocks, crashing waves and miles of sand, this really was worth coming for. Can't recommend this highly enough. Cornwall at it's best.
By Sunday, the partygoers had gone, leaving us alone on our pitch, with a few caravans, motorhomes, tents and campers for Company.
The shop was not that well stocked, with just basics available, the toilets were really clean and looked after with a quaint 50p per shower charge, but the showers were great and hot, so good value.
The dog walk down to the beach via the woods was lovely, a bit overgrown and wet in places, but a delightful walk down through hills, caravans, woods and sand-dunes.
Although we lost our water supply in our van here, I think we enjoyed this site the most. The area is rural and coastal, with beautiful towns, coves and pubs around the Lizard and about. It is a bit of a trip (Lizard is the most Southerly point in the UK) but the little port and town of Cadgwith, Kennance Cove and surrounding area are most delightful experiences and we loved it. We did, on booking, request a sea-view, but that didn't happen!
I will say again, though, just in case there's any confusion; Kennack Sands, stunningly, stunningly beautiful. We will be back!
